And the winners are…

I was lucky enough this year to attend the most exciting trade show in the beauty industry, In-Cosmetic! I already mentioned it to you last year. This time, the show was in Barcelona, a city I love! I am back full of great news on the beauty industry…
During the show, a panel of industry experts awarded 3 winners for most innovative cosmetic ingredient of the year. Most of the time, these ingredients end up in your creams!

This year, Lipotec won the Bronze medal with Hyanify™, a marine bacterial extract that fights against dehydration and wrinkles. That is probably my favorite of the 3 awards since I love a product that boosts hydration!

The silver prize went to Mibelle Biochemistry, for their new ingredient DermCom™, Mibelle is a great manufacturer based in Switzerland. The quality of their ingredients is indisputable. This new ingredient stimulates the communication between cells to help boost collagen and elastin production while renewing skin’s resilience and firmness…this type of ingredient isalways a great addition to an anti-aging cream!

And finally, I was glad the Gold medal went to Unipex, with not only 1 but 2 actives ingredients, this year.
I love the fact that they are located in Canada and also in France of course ;) Their booth looked great in Barcelona, with beautiful modern photography.
Their new ingredient Progeline™, is a new peptide which helps fight the aging process. You know our love for peptides at Dermaglow, since we were the first to launch peptides in Canada 10 years ago!
Their second awarded ingredient was Adipofill™, a promising new natural filler with anti-aging proprieties, derived from vegetable glucose.

Hasta la vista!

Oscars 2012 mishap…

As you all know, this week-end was the 84rd annual Oscars ceremony, my favorite American evening of the year!
My mishap red carpet this year goes to Sandra Bullock.

Sandra will turn 50 in a couple of years and most of the time, she looks gorgeous (Think Sandra years in the 2009 Oscars). But this time, I could not help but notice she had NO wrinkles…like ZERO… Even stranger, her face looked totally different: the volume of her lips, cheeks and forehead have totally changed in the last couple of years. There is no doubt she has been going through many cosmetic procedures recently.
I have already written about the incredible facial change possible with cosmetic procedures (specifically Botox), this is yet another example.
Sandra’s overall look was too strict: the dress was not flattering on her figure, too high on her neck line (the back though, was not too bad). Her hair in a ponytail was a tricky choice: it was way too tight and too high, it only enhanced the odd volume of her face. Finally, her make-up was totally missed to my opinion, when she was interviewed from the side her eyes were so dark, I could not see her pupils, it looks like she had demon eyes (yes, my TV was not over-saturated…), her lip gloss was too beige, and her blush was too pink. Her brows were nicely shaped; I have to give her that! (But again the best brows and skin on the red carpet this year was definitely Rooney Mara).

The lesson here: we need to be aware of our natural volume. If getting a procedure is your thing, you might need to change your usual beauty products after. Having less wrinkles yes, having an all different face, no thank you!

Going up!

I have great news! This year, I will develop a new category on “the Science of Beautiful skin” called “Going up”. Every month, I will post ‘things’ that are trending and then give my opinion on “should we or should we not” follow this trend.

Green will indicate if it is a great trend, Orange will indicate if it is a good idea, and Red will indicate that it is a pretty/interesting trend, but I will not recommend it outside of an editorial page!

As the month is almost over , here is my first pick for January 2012:

A Juice Cleanse. You all know my love for juices, I have been a good juicer since the last 2 years. Now, the juicing secret is becoming a new detox or diet.
This is what happened on Garance Dore blog a couple of days ago
I think I am going to try it but I have not decided 100% yet. It is a pretty drastic technique and I am not sure it is suited for everybody. But as I already juice every couple of days, I can see the benefits of this type of cleanse. However, I will not use this for weight loss.
I choose the Total Cleanse one because it is Canadian and they are located around the corner from my house. But the Blue Print is also very popular.

* This remind me: here is a funny video of an accelerated Birkram Yoga class, this is the other ‘natural’ way I used to detox, my skin feels great after a class! Don’t even need my Clarisonic ;)

B.B creams, this is a new beauty revelation for the western world. Not eveybody has tried it yet, but I have to say, I am so addicted to my Korean B.B cream and I am planning to include one the dermaglow family. So this is green light!, soon every brands will have a BB cream in their line.
You can find lots of info about BB creams on Janine or Michelle’s blog!

Peplum tops, apparently there are the spring must-have…hummmm…I still think having an accentuated waist is not the most flattering for the most of us…so I will probably pass on this, but I will let you know if I change my mind!

Voila for this month,
Bisous,
Solen

1920′s make-up revival (The Artist)

I wanted to be a little patriotic today and post some images of The Artist a silent black and white French film that has seduced Hollywood, but apparently confused American filmgoers!

The Oscar nominations were announced this morning and The Artist is up for nine nominations, including Best Actor and Best Picture.
Last week, it scored Best Comedy at the Golden Globes, and North America discovered actor Jean Dujardin for the first time. Well, French people have been in love with Jean for a very long time.
Here is where it all started.

But The Artist is confirming yet another trend: the Hollywood Icon. As I mentioned last week, the Golden Globes bought back the simple and elegant look of the 1920s with lots of celebrities wearing classic, heavy make-up and classic mermaid gowns. In the 1920’s, women didn’t need 100 different tools to achieve perfection, just five key products: Brow kit, Red lipstick and assorted lip contour, Clear matte powder, Black khol, Mascara or fake eyelashes. Everything was about having a graphic, neat and spotless finish: Perfect, ivory skin, extra-thin eyebrows, strict matte red lips and dramatic lashes.

If they needed fewer products, they also needed more time to get ready!

But don’t worry, I found a quick and funny tutorial for you:

So, who wants to give this look a try for their Oscar party?

* And to finish your look: don’t forget to spray ‘Shalimar’ Guerlain or ‘Joy’ from Patou
** Oh… and you need a cute puppy too ;)

Gloden Globes 2012 mishap…

Having lived in Europe my whole life, I never really watched awards ceremonies before. It’s difficult to watch the Globes, the BAFTA’s or the Oscars because of the different time zones.
But now that I can watch these shows in real time, I get to share my comments—LIVE!
On the Golden Globes red carpet last Sunday, I couldn’t help but notice the comeback of two beauty trends: heavy make-up (see Angelina Jolie, Madonna, Claire Danes…) and nude make-up (see Nicole Kidman, Elle Macpherson, Heidi Klum…). Nude make-up is just boring and monochrome, so let’s talk about the return of the full face.

Take a look at Claire Danes for a sec:

She might be wearing the prefect minimalist dress for her body shape but she looked way too shinny and much older than she usually does. What happened here?

To me, this was a good example of someone who doesn’t know how to take care of her skin, and was badly advised by her make-up artist. This shinny face could have been prevented!!

There is no question her make-up was too strong with both heavy eyes and lips. There is far too much highlighter around the contour of her eyes and to make matters worse, I think she’s wearing the wrong colour concealer—it was way too pale. The purple accent that was used on the smoky eye was too sophisticated, it added depth in the wrong places and paired with the “classic” red lips the final look was too old school.

But what really killed me was her skin. The foundation had been totally absorbed and made her enlarge pores visible. This was just the wrong foundation for her.

Here’s what I think could have prevented this shinny look: if you have combination to oily skin, you need to be very strict with your beauty regimen; cleansing and balancing your skin should be your main focus. Before a big party, if it’s too late for a deep treatment, use a gentle exfoliation a couple of hours before putting on your make-up (one with glycolic acid or lactic acid, depending of your skin type) to remove all impurities, and dead skin cells and to help refresh your tone. Here on Claire, either a primer wasn’t applied or the cream underneath was too greasy. Always apply a primer to reduce the appearance of enlarged pores, and to absorb shine. It’s best to pick a primer that doesn’t have any light-reflecting pigments (one with light-reflecting pigments will increase the shine, obviously). And try to avoid too many lipids in your moisturizer, an oil-free moisturizer with Hyaluronic acid would be your best bet.

Of course, I couldn’t end this post without saying that Dermaglow happens to have a great moisturizer and primer for those 30+, that would have been perfect for Claire!

Milan, Menswear FW/12

It’s my first post of the year so I guess it’s never too late, some would some say!
So to get on a good start, I thought I share with you something different, a video and images of Milan Men’s Fashion Week, Prada autumn/winter 2012.

I am not that keen on men’s fashion week, I actually never watch it. The bottom line is that menswear does not make me daydream of a possible new gift for myself nor challenges my wardrobe creativity. But this time around, there was something spellbinding about the latest Prada men’s show. Maybe it’s because of my love for the cinema and the men who work their magic on screen, I love how they always look like perfection from head to toe and off course wearing the best of the best on the red carpet. It was fun to see Adrian Brody, Garry Oldman, Willem Dafoe, Tim Roth, Emile Hirsh, Jamie Bell, and Garrett Hedlund, wearing Prada and walking down the catwalk in their own way. There was even a little bit of awkwardness about it. Or maybe I just liked the Dracula-esque military/aristocratic style, the gigantic chess game-like red carpet, or the round glass shape.
Miuccia Prada explained to the New York Times “It’s about power but it started with the idea of characters”. This show has definitely strengthened men’s fashion last week, and that was refreshing…
Enjoy,
Solen.

The science of fashion…

I got totally excited when I saw the installation in the Parisian Store of Tsumori Chisato.

It is a beautiful art perspective on fashion meeting beauty science, a topic I found very modern and that is being more and more utilized!
The artist is called Emilie Faif and she is not new to store installation (she did store windows for the Isabelle Marrant, some installation for Hermes and Kenzo Parfum). The actual installation is called “Under your skin” and displays a textile replica of a skin anatomy illustration and feature of a long dress in the same color tone.
T.Chisato clothes are very bold and Japanese, but I did buy some amazing tie dye tights once in Autumn-Winter 08/09.
Their store installations are always amazing so I love to visit this store when I am in Paris.
